It Would Never Work, but I’m Imagining Suggesting an “Unfollow Amnesty” on Medium 😆

If only we could ask the suspicious accounts to unfollow us…

As a writer, imagine your follower count being cut in half overnight — then seeing your future statistics improve!

Earlier, I was reading the following article:

Carol describes how she blocks accounts that appear suspicious, and there is a good reason to do this.

Having countless followers might appear impressive, but if 75% are fake accounts, it can harm a writer’s statistics.

As Carol says, Medium shows a writer’s articles to a small percentage of their followers. If the response is not favourable because those accounts never read anything, then the article will not perform well.

I wonder if such a poor response might tell Medium’s algorithm not to bother promoting that story any further, potentially impacting the writer’s other articles, too.

This led me to imagine having an ‘unfollow amnesty’ in which people are asked to…
