The Strangest Present I Ever Received

I still don’t quite know what to make of it

From time to time, my mum would discover a Christmas present she’d forgotten to give me. They were usually tucked away in the back of her wardrobe; sometimes they were wrapped, and sometimes they weren’t.

One year, something rather strange happened.

I was an adult and still lived with my mum. I think it was after my dad had died, which would mean it was the early 90s, and I’d have been 22–24 years old.

On this occasion, there were four of us in the living room: me and my mum, along with my sister and her boyfriend — they had called round to visit us.

All of a sudden, my mum remembered a present she’d forgotten to give to me. A few minutes later, she presented me with a gift-wrapped box.

I’ve always felt a little awkward opening presents in front of other people, but perhaps this was the moment when those feelings got worse.

With my mum, sister, and her boyfriend watching, I ripped through the wrapping paper to reveal…
