How to Get a High Score in TOEIC and Other English Proficiency Exams if You’re Not a Native English Speaker

My latest TOEIC score is 980 out of 990.

TOEIC stands for Test of English for International Communication, it is the English language proficiency standard test for non-native speakers. In Thailand where I worked previously, the test is needed by non-native English-speaking foreigners to apply for a visa if they want to teach in the country.

Ilocano, one of the dialects in the Philippines, is our household dialect. Filipino is my country’s native language. The habits below allowed me to get decent scores in English proficiency exams even if I do not use the language in everyday conversations.

1. Read all the English materials you can get your hands on.

Reading familiarizes you with the language. It allows your brain to analyze and absorb its patterns and nuances. You cannot possibly know all the correct answers in a test, but if you are familiar with the language, you are more likely to recognize the correct combinations of words especially that most English proficiency exams are multiple-choice.
