Remembering the Original Apple Macintosh

A personal story of discovering and using the Mac, starting in the 1980s

To get my writing week started, I recycled another one of my old computer articles.

This one is loosely linked to my weird workplace series because my first exposure to the Mac, and the graphical user interface, was when I started there in 1986.

My next article about old computers will feature the Commodore Amiga. The only trouble is, that article refers to some software I wrote that was published on a magazine cover disk — so it gives away my identity…

Given that I publish old computer articles about once a fortnight, I have two weeks to figure something out.

Weird Workplace Stories 22: Dodgy Electrics in the Cellar

It was a lesson in what not to do

This is a fairly short story about a time when I got to experience John’s rather cavalier attitude towards electrical safety. I don’t think I’d been working there very long at the time.

To create the photo, I took a variety of different wires, stripped a few, and put them on my garage floor!

My Online Car Buying Fiasco

It’s a jungle out there

Having mentioned my car buying problems in the personal notes section of previous newsletters, I finally felt ready to share one of the stories.

This is something that happened a few weeks ago.

I avoided mentioning the name of the online-only company that sold me the car. But you could say there’s a small clue in the subtitle.

The photo is one I took of the car in question. About an hour after it was delivered, I was stuck at the side of the road, inflating one of the tyres.

Would You Like To Know Medium’s Daily Limit?

And does the number of claps matter? I have the official answers!

I try not to do too many meta stories (writing about writing).

But after posting too many comments last week, and finding my account in Medium Jail, I decided to ask them about the limits.

This short article includes the reply I got from Medium.

To create the image, I took a photo of my house wall. Then I darkened it and added the text.

2. Recommended Writer

This is the part where I talk about another writer on Medium.

I’ve chosen Adrienne Beaumont this time.

Adrienne is an Australian who writes about travel, past experiences, and daily life as a mother and grandmother.

She prefers to spend money on travel, rather than things like a fancy new car.

After seeing some of the beautiful photos in her articles, I might have to rethink how much money I propose to spend on a newer car.

Here’s a selection of articles by Adrienne Beaumont on Medium:

3. Personal Notes

Preoccupied

My writing week got off to a slow start.

I was somewhat preoccupied for a few days after hearing some surprisingly harsh words from my fiancée. Some of the things she said changed my perception of what she thinks of me.

It all started when I hadn’t realised she wanted me to take her to view a car. I thought we’d already rejected that particular one.

But, out of the blue, I found myself driving her to an unfamiliar town with zero notice or preparation. Being autistic meant that was very stressful for me — I like to plan things at least a few hours in advance.

After a couple of incorrect turns, we got there and looked at the car. In the end, she decided it was no good, and we left it.

Communication is so important in relationships, and we certainly need to work on ours.

Creativity

My somewhat low mood resulted in my creativity suffering for a few days.

So this week’s stories consist of a recycled old blog post about the Apple Mac; a weird workplace story that I almost finished last week; a recollection of my recent car buying fiasco; and a short piece about how many things writers can publish each day on Medium.

Nearly 1k

As I’m writing this, I have 999 followers on Medium.

I have never exceeded 1000 on any platform before, so it’s suddenly quite an exciting time for me!

Thank you to all my readers and subscribers.

Best wishes, and see you again next week.

Thank you for reading!
